Edit (2014-02-06): Uploaded x64 & x86 patches for Windows 8.1.  This time I have uploaded only the patches – you can find the installers in the previous links. The installation procedure is almost the same except this time you have to reboot.

Lenovo has only released a ThinkPad version of Active Protection System for Windows 8 (Version 1.77.0.9).
The latest version available for IdeaPad S205 on Lenovo Support (Version 1.70.11, Windows 7) is not compatible with Windows 8 (it crashes immediately due to compatibility issues).

Fortunately, I’ve found a way to run the APS on this netbook (and probably on other unsupported devices as well) by combining these two versions.
It turned out that the .cpl (Control Panel Extension) was the non-working module. I hope that Lenovo will release a proper, fixed version. Until then, here is a quick installation guide:

Installation

1. Run the APS 1.70.11 installer.
Select English when asked for language. Don’t change the default installation folder.
It isn’t necessary to reboot.
2. Run patch.bat
3. Reboot
4. Check Lenovo – Airbag Protection in Control Panel.

Supported devices (according to S205 Support page)

Lenovo B470, B570, V370, V470, V570, IdeaPad S205

If you haven’t already seen it, check out this tutorial to play a small game using the accelerometer driver 🙂

I installed on a V570 and while the control panel applet complains of “compatibility problems”, the yellow LED comes on when I move the laptop.

Unfortunately this doesn’t stop the TPShocks.exe from closing 10-20 seconds after it is run.

    • OS? x86 or x64? Device?

I had only occasional crashes on Windows 8 x64. I haven’t tried it on 8.1 yet.

Sadly, we don’t have the source code and won’t receive any update from Lenovo.

I am going to try creating a new patch but currently I don’t have time.

        Whoops, x64 on WIn8.1

Good thing about Win8.1 is that the Lenovo Energy, Audio, Video and Ethernet drivers don’t need to installed, all automatic and working. Battery health seems to work properly now – battery remains at 50% and not charging whilst power is connected. I’ve only needed to install Synaptics (WinXP) and SD Card (Win7) drivers so far. ACPI needs to be installed but functions properly without it. Not sure about Bluetooth.

Unfortunately the only thing that we get with Lenovo is the hardware and warranty – the after sales service exists but has never assisted me. Drove me crazy trying to get Win8 installed with wireless working and received no help. http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/No-Wireless-with-Windows-8-on-S205-Win7-8-drivers-I-ve-read-that/td-p/921443

        Appreciate the work you’ve done.

      • Have you seen my Windows 8 driver download page? I’ve recently updated it with the latest drivers for Windows 8 & 8.1.

Bluetooth drivers are not needed (and won’t work) on Windows 8.1.
I wasn’t aware that battery protection works built-in on Windows 8.1, thanks for the info (most of the functions in Lenovo Energy Management are not compatible with 8.1 so you shouldn’t install it). The latest Synaptics driver can only be installed with driver signature enforcement disabled. But all the other drivers are safe to install and work well on 8.1.

    • Please try the new 8.1 patch and let me know if it works.

I upgraded to 8.1 on my V570 some time ago. Took a long time, but it went seamlessly. APS continued to function without changes.

      • Without any patch? Which version do you use? Can you access the settings for Active Protection without crashing?
My patches fix this issue while using the same Win7 driver (1.70.11). The Win8.1 patches contain files from the latest ThinkPad software (1.78.0.11) for Windows 8.1.
